Informations générales

Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM1), also known as Tying-Up or Equine Rhabdomyolysis, is a metabolic disorder that causes a range of muscular disorders. The disease has been observed in a wide variety of horse breeds, but is most common in the Percheron, Belgian, Paint, Quarter Horse and Appaloosa. It is caused by an incompletely dominant mutation to the gene GYS1.

Caractéristiques cliniques

Symptoms of PSSM1 are variable in type and severity, and generally become apparent when the horse is first placed into training. Symptoms include shortened stride, muscle firmness and stiffness, sweating, as well as pain and muscle weakness that can cause reluctance to exert and even an inability to rise. Such 'tying up' episodes can be brought on by light exercise. A specialized and well-managed diet can mitigate and even prevent symptoms.
