La porphyrie intermittente aiguë (AIP) est classée comme porphyrie hépatique. C’est un trouble de la synthèse de l’hème. Les chats atteints d’AIP ont une activité synthase hydroxyméthylbilane (HMB) à moitié normale, une enzyme nécessaire dans la voie de synthèse de l’hème.
Caractéristiques cliniques
In cats with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), Erythrodontia (brown discoloured teeth) is an important phenotypic feature. Cats with autosomal dominant AIP presented with erythrodontia, reddish-brown urine and mild changes in erythrocytes. The symptoms will develop at a young age. Within a few hours to a maximum of several weeks after birth, the characteristics that go with these genetic effects will become visible.

Les symptômes sont très semblables à ceux du porphyria erythropoietic congénital (CEP, OMIA 001175-9685). Il existe cinq mutations différentes connues qui peuvent causer une porphyrie intermittente aiguë. Des tests sont disponibles pour toutes ces mutations.
