As in humans, Narcolepsy in dogs is a long-term sleep disorder resulting in lethargy and sudden bouts of sleep. Canine narcolepsy is a recessive disorder caused by a mutation to the HCRTR2 gene. The variant analysed in this test is found in the Dachshund. Related variants occur in the Doberman Pinscher and the Labrador Retriever.
Caractéristiques cliniques
Affected dogs are constantly sleepy, fall asleep quickly and often, and may suffer from bouts of cataplexy (collapsing while awake, which can last seconds to minutes).
