Informations générales

Northern Terrier Upper Airway Syndrome (NTUAS) is a breathing disorder found in the Norwich Terrier. The disorder is linked to a mutation to the gene ADAMTS3.

NTUAS has an symptoms overlap with Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), a disorder that causes breathing difficulties in brachycephalic dogs.

Even though Norwich Terriers often have a normal noses and nostrils, they can still show symptoms of an obstructive airway. The main issues in affected dogs include a slightly elongated soft palate, extra tissue in the throat, and structural changes in the larynx. These abnormalities, caused by the ADAMTS3 mutation, can lead to breathing difficulties of varying severity. Further research is needed to fully understand the range of symptoms.

Caractéristiques cliniques

Affected dogs may experience breathing difficulties, often accompanied by stridor (wheezing or snorting sounds). Other possible symptoms include enlarged or swollen tonsils and partial laryngeal collapse. Diagnosis can be challenging without a laryngoscopic examination.
