Informations générales
American Staffordshire Terrier Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy (ALPP) is a severe neurological disorder characterized by difficulty breathing and loss of muscle coordination. This variant, observed in the American Staffordshire Terrier, is caused by an autosomal recessive genetic mutation.
Caractéristiques cliniques
Affected dogs typically present around 3 months of age with laryngeal paralysis and respiratory distress. Loss of movement coordination often develops a few months to a few years later. Additional symptoms may include limb weakness, ataxia (loss of coordination), progressive muscle atrophy, altered barking (dysphonia), vomiting, and swallowing difficulties. In some cases, symptoms may stabilize, although episodes of ataxia and swallowing difficulties may persist. The dogs of which symptoms stabilize, seem to lead an almost normal life.
