Informations générales
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), also known as Shock Lung, is a severe lung disorder that leads to significant breathing difficulties. It is usually triggered by external factors, such as severe illness or injury to the lungs, rather than genetic predisposition. However, in Dalmatian dogs, a familial variant of ARDS has been identified, that might be caused by a recessive mutation in the ANLN gene. This gene encodes anillin-actin binding protein that plays an important role in the organisation of epithelial cells in the bronchial tubes and alveoli, which are essential for gas exchange between the lungs and bloodstream.
Caractéristiques cliniques
Affected dogs develop progressively-worsening tachypnea (rapid breathing) and dyspnea (shortness of breath). They may also have underdeveloped kidneys or hydrocephalus. The disorder causes severe and ultimately fatal dysfunction of the lungs, and euthanasia on humane grounds is likely to be necessary.
Additional Information
Although further studies may provide insights into the genetic factors contributing to respiratory conditions, the potential direct association between ARDS in Dalmatians and the ANLN gene remains to be fully investigated.
