In dogs affected with Myotonia Congenita (MC) part of the skeletal muscle chloride channels are unable to fully open. The result is a delay in skeletal muscle relaxation, frequent contraction and muscle hypertrophy.
This variant of the disorder is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene CLCN1. It is found in the Australian Cattle Dog and the Border Collie.
Caractéristiques cliniques
Les chiens souffrant de Myotonia Congenital montrent une démarche raide, en particulier au début du mouvement et lors de changements rapides de posture (se retournant rapidement, tombant). Les symptômes peuvent diminuer avec l’exercice. D’autres symptômes sont hypertrophie grave de muscle squelettique, difficulté à monter, bruits respiratoires accrus, difficulté à avaler, et hypersalivation. Les symptômes commencent à un jeune âge.
