Spongiform Leukoencephalomyelopathy (SLEM) also known as shaking puppy syndrome (SPS), is an autosomal recessive disease for the Border Terrier breed. Puppies with this disease show uncontrollable shaking of their hind limbs as soon as they first attempt to stand and walk. As the puppies grow, the shaking may spread to the entire body and the prognosis is generally poor.
Caractéristiques cliniques
Clinical signs include severe tremors, primarily in the hindquarters, which manifest as uncoordinated wagging of the tail and body. These tremors typically stop when the puppy is asleep.
Affected puppies struggle with feeding and may exhibit delayed growth. Unfortunately, many affected pups are euthanized due to welfare concerns. However, a small number have shown signs of recovery with attentive nursing care and have developed into relatively normal adults.
